In Hinduism, the river Ganges is considered sacred. It is believed that bathing in the river causes the remission of sins and facilitates liberation from the cycle of life and death. It is also a lifeline to millions of Indians who live along its banks who depend on it for their daily needs. Pilgrims travel long distances to immerse the ashes of their kin in the precious water.

The Kumh Mela is a mass pilgrimage to the Ganges. The major event of this summer festival is the ritual bathing of thousands of holy men and women at the banks of the river.
