Although Confucianism remained the basis for the structure of government in China, it was Buddhism, introduced in the first century B.C.E., which flourished from the Han to the Tang (206 B,C,E.-907 C.E.). Rag-Dung are decorated with repousse brass cuffs dotted with red coral and turquoise stones and some with repousse brass garlands on the bell were used.

Dung Chen, constructed primarily of copper, became the common instrument in Buddhism and is correctly identified as zangs dung or dung chen. For this reason, many dung chen are generically and mistakenly referred to as rag dung. The only two systematic distinctions that can be made in classifying dung chen are the number of telescoping sections into which each collapses (two or three).
