Originally, the habits, or robes, worn by monks were of whatever color of cloth was available based on donations. In time, various orders of monks developed colors chosen to express the philosophy of their particular community. The Carthusians, a contemplative order, wear undyed white wool robes with white over-tunics called scapulars or cowls. The only goal of the Carthusian way is contemplation, pure and continuous prayer and living unceasingly in the light of the love of God for us which is manifested in Christ. The Cathusians live a life of austerity, silence and solitude. The motto of the Cathusian is “The Cross is steady while the world is turning.”
