Photograph of Painting

The Last Supper depicts Jesus at a table with his apostles celebrating the Passover meal (Seder) prior to the betrayal and His crucifixion.  The Seder is the Jewish ritual meal commemorating the “passing over” of the angel of death in the book of Exodus.

The firstborns of all homes that had the mark of the blood of the sacrificial lamb over their doors were spared.  This occurred on the eve of the flight (exodus) from slavery into freedom.  DaVinci places Jesus as the triangular focal point in this piece, flanked by His disciples, framed by the doorway behind Him and with all the lines of perspective in the ceiling and walls radiating out from His head.

Basic Information on The Last Supper:

The Last Supper
is a late 15th-century mural painting by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci housed by the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. It is one of the Western world's most recognizable paintings.

The work is assumed to have been started around 1495–96 and was commissioned as part of a plan of renovations to the church and its convent buildings by Leonardo's patron Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. The painting represents the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with His apostles, as it is told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Leonardo has depicted the consternation that occurred among the Twelve Apostles when Jesus announced that one of them would betray Him.
Due to the methods used, a variety of environmental factors, and intentional damage, only little of the original painting remains today despite numerous restoration attempts, the last being completed in 1999.

“The source of love is deep in us and we can help others realize a lot of happiness. One word, one action, one thought can reduce another person’s suffering and bring that person joy.”
