Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister who was instrumental in the fight for Civil Rights. He was a proponent of non-violent civil disobedience. His public discourses did much to stir the hearts of Americans and brought about much change. His speeches are oft-quoted. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Pintu, from New Delhi, chose to paint this American leader because Dr. King represents Christianity well-lived to him. Dr. King is admired by many from India because of his respect for Gandhi and the use of Gandhi's philosophy regarding resistance to injustice.
