On September 19, 2020 at 4:00 PM, Five Rivers Chautauqua planted a Peace Tree on Museum Grounds.
Each year, on or near the UN International Day of Peace (September 21st), Five Rivers Chautauqua and partnering organizations plant a white pine tree and bury symbols of violence beneath it. We do this to honor the Iroquois Great Law of Peace, an extended oral teaching that was given to the Iroquois tribes to guide them away from division and discord toward unity and peaceful relations.

We planted this Peace Tree to grow on top of buried weapons (whether actual dismantled weapons or “weapon words” (written on slips of paper)), and the community made a commitment to renounce violence and to live together in harmony as One. Our 2020 event marked the sixth annual planting of a white pine Tree of Peace in the Miami Valley region.

In accordance with current guidelines of the State of Ohio, guests were required to wear masks and social distance during the event, and were invited into the museum for tours before and after.
